Toondah Harbour FOSI Members Letter 2020

Outrageous Toondah Harbour Development Proposal

As someone who loves Moreton Bay, its foreshores and islands, I am contacting you to say that I strongly oppose the Toondah Harbour development at Cleveland, as proposed by Walker Corporation. It includes an astounding 3,600 high rise apartments, an hotel, a convention centre and a marina, and will cover an area of 67ha, including 49.5ha of tidal wetlands in Moreton Bay.

This outrageous proposal will have devastating environmental impacts, including:

• Destruction of Ramsar listed wetlands, a vital habitat for wader birds that migrate each year         to and from east Asia, including the critically endangered Eastern Curlew, the endangered            Bar-tailed Godwit and 18 other species of migratory birds that feed or roost in the Toondah         wetlands. 

• Damage to mangroves that are important habitat for fish breeding and for crabs and other            marine invertebrates.

• Removal or damage of mature trees that are home for Koalas.

• Pollution of water in the bay during the 20-year construction period, killing the sea grass             that Dugong feed on.

• Coastal flooding and erosion from positioning such a large development in a tidal zone that         will be subject to rising sea level and storm surges due to climate change. 

I am concerned that the proposed development was made a Priority Development Area under state legislation, bypassing local government processes, environmental assessment at the state level, and my right to be consulted on the development. 

I ask you to announce publicly, before the upcoming QLD election, that:

• you do not support Walker Corporation’s proposed Toondah Harbour development, 

• if your party wins the upcoming state election, it will revoke the Priority Development Area and ensure that the proposal undergoes a full environmental assessment process under Queensland laws, including community consultation.

I look forward to your reply as it will help me decide who to vote for in the election.

Dead seabirds needed for plastic pollution study

Lauren Roman, a graduate ecology / zoology student from the University of Queensland is undertaking a study on plastic marine debris in the diets of Australian seabirds and shorebirds. Lauren’s research for her honours thesis is being supervised by Dr Kathy Townsend based at the UQ Moreton Bay Research Station at Dunwich.  To conduct the study in a way that is as ethical as possible and brings no stress or harm to living birds, the approach being used is to dissect birds that have already died of natural (or unnatural) causes. Lauren is seeking assistance from FOSI members with the collection of suitable specimens. Lauren requests that if we find any dead marine birds (seabird/ shorebird/ gull/ heron/ egret etc) that are relatively intact, that we place them in a plastic bag and bring them to the Moreton Bay Research Station and ask for the specimen to be put in the freezer for her.
